When do leftovers expire?

How we calculate the expiration date.

Updated December 15, 2024

We use USDA-backed food safety guidelines. Rough shelf life (refrigerated, properly stored):

  • Fish: 2 days
  • Poultry, cooked meat: 3 days
  • Casseroles, pasta bakes: 3 days
  • Soups, stews, chili: 4 days
  • Cooked rice, grains: 4–5 days

The expiration date is set from the ingredient with the shortest shelf life. Always use your senses too — if something smells or looks off, trust that.
